Senior Olympics

MINERAL COUNTY, WV SENIOR OLYMPICS 2008

Aging & Family Services of Mineral County will be sponsoring a Senior Olympics on June 10-13th. This will be our seventh year hosting this event. In June 2007, over 100 seniors from West Virginia and surrounding states participated in a variety of competitions. The event will be held at Potomac State College in Keyser.

Mineral County Senior Olympics offers people fifty-five and over the opportunity to compete in over twenty sporting events plus a bake goods and craft competition. Competition is an important factor in this program of fitness through sports. It is the incentive that motivates so many seniors to begin and remain in their chosen fitness activities. Each year, this great competition motivates them to train more, reach farther, in pursuit of those goals they have set for themselves. It's not just about competing against others. It's about striving for their "personal best" time, score, or distance.

But, the Olympics are more than just competition. It's also for the fellowship. Competitors will meet new people, make new friends, and do things with others who have similar interests. For those not competing in athletic events there are a variety of other activities including Bingo, throughout the event.

This year the Olympics will begin on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 and finish with the awards ceremony on Friday afternoon. A cookout with entertainment is planned along with other special events throughout the week. The banquet and awards ceremony will be held at the college beginning at 11:30 AM on Friday.

A variety of events are held. Non-athletic events include scrabble, a spelling bee, poker, plus a bake goods and craft competition. Track and Field events include 20 & 40 yard dash, long jump, Frisbee toss, archery, softball throw, bean bag toss, fish casting and a football throw. Other events are basketball free throws, golf putting, billiards, ping pong, bowling and more.

A highlight of previous competitions is our Thursday evening talent show which will include an "Ugly-legs" contest.

The entry fee for this year's event will be $25 which includes an Olympic T-shirt. This amount will help offset the large financial cost to host the Olympics. Lodging for out of town competitors has been arranged at Potomac State College.
